Breaking in a New Motor
You must break in a new motor after it's been rebuilt. The section below is broken down by miles. Its not by any means the only way to do it but its our method for new engine builds.
Before the drive
- Make sure all fluids are topped off
- Turn the engine, using a ratchet with the battery unplugged, over 4-5 times to ensure that its put back correctly and theres piston to valve clearance.
- Crank the engine without the ECU(or pull out the spark plug wire) to pump oil through out the engine, building oil pressure to ensure that all internal parts are lubricated.
- Put in a good basemap to get the car started
0-250 Miles
- Keep throttle under 30%
- Keep rpm under 3500
- No more than 3psi
- Do an oil change (look for unusual metal shavings etc)
251-500 Miles
- Keep throttle under 40%
- Keep rpm under 4500
- No more than 5psi
500-1000 Miles
- Keep throttle under 60%
- Keep rpm under 6500
- No more than 9psi
- Run slightly more aggressive
1000+
- Run slightly more aggressive
- Slowly take rpm to redline
- No more than 9psi
- Check fluid level
- Oil Change
- Ready for Dyno Tuning
